How to Convert to a Hook Lift

Lifting an object up off the ground can easily be done by using a hoist or a lift that has a hook. You can convert a section of the ceiling in your garage or workshop into a lift station by making your own hook lift. You can use a manual crank winch that is attached to a nearby wall or by pulling on a rope by hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where in your garage or workshop that you want to install the hook lift. One place can be in a corner or near a bench.

    • 2

Find the joists in the ceiling by using a stud finder. Run the stud finder along the ceiling, if your ceiling is finished, and make a mark with the pencil.

    • 3

Measure along the length of the ceiling joist with the tape measure. Make two marks that are six inches apart.

    • 4

Drill a 1-inch deep pilot hole on each mark by using a power drill. Insert eye hooks into each pilot hole and tighten by turning the threads counterclockwise with the pliers.

    • 5

Place the loop of the pulley onto each of the hooks. Close the eye hook by bending it closed using the pliers.

    • 6

Thread a hook cable from the chain crank winch through each of the pulleys. Raise your hook cable by turning the handle on the chain crank winch.
