How to Get Ready for Beauty Pageants

Although beauty pageants are frequently associated with physical attractiveness, most beauty pageants judge contestants on a variety of factors, including interview skills, talent and career or volunteer experience. Preparing for a beauty pageant can be nerve-wracking, and some participants choose to overly fixate on their physical appearance. However, anyone can excel at a beauty pageant with proper preparation and an impressive personal presentation.
  1. Talent Show

    • Pick a talent to display for the talent portion of the beauty pageant. Your talent should be something you're already good at and comfortable displaying in public. Beauty pageants generally allow any talent that can be displayed, ranging from puppetry to singing. Once you've decided on your talent, begin practicing and, if you need help, consider enlisting the assistance of a talent coach.

    Interviews

    • Many beauty pageants use their winners as spokespersons for various causes, so intellect and interview skills are extremely important. Educate yourself about current events and develop well-informed opinions. Be mindful of the fact that beauty pageants don't typically want candidates who are overly political, so avoid making controversial statements. Instead, focus on compassion, helping people and understanding alternative perspectives. Be prepared to remain calm even when questions are confusing, offensive or designed to trap you into saying something that you don't want to.

    Physical Fitness

    • Most beauty pageants have a swimsuit competition. While many contestants view this as a competition to determine who is thinnest, this portion is actually dedicated to physical fitness. Avoid starving yourself into an eating disorder. Instead, work on toning your body and remaining healthy. This not only improves your chances of winning, but also enables you to be role model for a healthy body image and weight.

    Physical Appearance

    • A few weeks before the pageant, focus on getting your physical appearance into perfect shape. Use a home tooth-whitening treatment or have your teeth whitened. Get a spray tan and have a facial. Have your hair trimmed and, if your hair is colored, ensure that there aren't roots showing. Avoid making any dramatic changes immediately before the pageant. Do a practice run for your pageant makeup to ensure that you have enough time to apply it and that it looks good both in person and on camera.
