How to Make a Woven Basket From Newspaper

Newspaper has many uses aside after it̵7;s been read. Make a woven basket from newspaper that will be strong enough to hold objects and that you can carry around without fear of it tearing or falling apart. Besides the newspaper, you will need a few supplies found around the home. No special skills are required, although the weaving process does require attention to detail and patience to do it correctly.

2 Sunday newspapers
Ruler
Pencil
Adhesive spray

Instructions

  Tear along the folds of two Sunday newspapers to release the pages. Continue to do this until you have a total of 96 pages. Place the sheets of newspaper on a table.

  Place one of the sheets of newspaper horizontally on the table. Fold the top over to the bottom and smooth the crease. Repeat this procedure two more times. Repeat this procedure with each sheet of newspaper.

  Place two strips vertically side by side. Make a dot on the vertical strip at your left at the halfway mark. Run the left end of a strip held horizontally over the vertical strip on the right and beneath the vertical strip with the dot. Arrange the horizontal strip so that it's even with the dot.

  Run the right end of a strip held horizontally over the vertical strip with the dot and beneath the vertical strip next to it. Arrange this strip so that it's beneath the other horizontal strip.

  Add another vertical strip to the side of the vertical strip at the right. Weave the left end of a horizontal strip over the strip just placed down and beneath the strip to its left. Raise the end of the strip above the strip that has the dot on it. Add a vertical strip to the side of the strip that has a dot.

  Weave the right end of a horizontal strip over the strip with the dot and beneath the strip to its right. Raise the strip above the strip to the right and beneath the strip at the right. Continue to do this procedure until you have used a total of 15 vertical strips of newspaper.

  Fold all the strips at one end upward at a 90-degree angle. Weave a strip of newspaper over and under the strips that are at a 90-degree angle, starting at the top. Continue to weave strips of newspaper beneath each other until you reach the bottom of the basket you're making. Repeat this procedure with the other sides of the basket.

  Bend in each corner to round the edges. Weave strips from top to bottom around the edges of two adjacent sides in the same manner as you did before. Weave strips around all of the adjacent sides in this same manner to keep the sides of the basket upright.

  Spray adhesive glue on the inside bottom of the woven basket. Place uncut sheets of newspaper inside the basket. Press the sheets against the glue and hold them there for one minute. Let the glue set for three hours before putting anything into your basket.
