How to Customize Operations on a Canon 7D

The Canon EOS 7D is a multiuse, digital single-lens reflex camera that can be used to shoot video just as well as it takes still photos. Canon targets the EOS 7D toward serious and semiprofessional photographers who have outgrown their existing photography equipment. While the outside of the Canon camera is dust and weather resistant, the interior houses extensive technology to maximize the photographer's picture-shooting options. Getting the most out of the camera means configuring the settings to capture your customized needs. At minimum, set up one custom configuration for still shots and a second for video.

Instructions

    • 1

Reset the current setting to the default settings by setting the mode dial to manual. Go to the menu, then navigate to Tab 11 to clear all the camera settings.

    • 2

Set the camera to manual. Go to the menu. On C1, set up the camera for a raw mode. This is the preferred mode for many photographers for shooting still shots. Scroll through each of the next 10 tabs and customize the setting based on your own experience and camera usage. On Tab 1, set the quality to raw. Tab 2 is where you set the balance and the picture style. Set the metering timer and the grid display on Tab 4. Skip Tab 5, and disable the AF point on Tab 6. Make a decision whether you want the auto rotation activated on Tab 7. Set the date and time on Tab 8. Skip Tab 9. Navigate to Tab 10, which is where you will decide what focus, drive and AF area works best for you. The typical decision is to choose all five AF areas. Choose to enable the settings.

    • 3

Press the ISO button and set the setting to 100. Set the AF-drive to one shot, and set the metering to evaluative.

    • 4

Set up for customized video recording on C2. Scroll to Tab 2 and select the picture style. Press set. Scroll to User Def 1. Press Info, then set the picture quality to neutral. Determine the correct sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone that you prefer. Skip to Tab 10 and set the imaging before enabling the settings. Switch from photo mode to video mode before navigating to Tab 4 where you will set the movie recording size. Return to the menu.

    • 5

Set the shutter speed to 50 on the top LCD. Return to the menu.

    • 6

Go to Tab 9 and change the user settings to register, then select C2 before pressing the set button to lock in your choices.
