How to Make a Tapping Pad

A touch-sensitive switch opens and closes an electrical circuit in much the same way as a conventional On/Off switch. To make a pad that employs a touch-sensitive switch (aka tapping pad), employ circuitry and materials acquired from a hobby shop and an electronics store. The tapping pad you will make can control DC-powered equipment, such as a DC motor used in hobby projects. Household tools will be required but no special electrical skills are needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper
  • Rubber mat, 10-by-14-by-1 inches
  • Ruler
  • Grease pencil
  • Utility knife
  • Bonding glue
  • Touch-sensitive switch
  • Silicone paste

Instructions

    • 1

Place a sheet of newspaper on a table. Place the rubber mat on the newspaper. Draw a 4-by-5-inch rectangle on the mat with a ruler and grease pencil.

    • 2

Score through the outline of the rectangle with the blade of a utility knife. Continue to score through the outline until the blade goes through the mat. Pull the rectangle out from the mat. Make a second rectangle in the same manner as that of the first.

    • 3

Place one of the rectangles on the newspaper horizontally. Measure up 1 inch from the lower right corner. Measure across 1 inch from this measurement and make a dot on the mat. Cut through the dot with the blade of the utility knife.

    • 4

Measure across the width of the rectangle and make a dot at the halfway mark. Measure the height of the rectangle and make a dot at the halfway mark. Line up the two dots with the ruler to find the center of the rectangle. Make an ̶0;X̶1; at this point on the rectangle.

    • 5

Apply a quarter-size amount of bonding glue to the ̶0;X.̶1; Place the bottom of the touch-sensitive switch against the ̶0;X.̶1; Press down on the switch and hold it there for two minutes. Let the glue set overnight.

    • 6

Run the wires attached to the switch through the hole in the corner of the rectangle. Apply bonding glue around the edges of the rectangle. Line up the other rectangle over the one just glued. Place the rectangle onto the one that has just been glued. Press the two rectangles together and hold the sides and ends down for two minutes. Let the glue set overnight.

    • 7

Turn the rectangle over. Apply silicone paste around the hole that the wires are exiting out of. Let the silicone paste set for six hours before turning the tapping pad you have made over.
