How to Make a Cold Shoe Mount in Photography

In photography, cold shoe mounts are used to hold a camera's external flash in place. As free standing light rigs, photographers can use cold shoe mounts in tandem with tripods to create a variety of lighting options for their photos. While these equipment pieces can be purchased, a photographer can also make their own cold shoe mount with the aid of a few materials and tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a handle or grip in your dominant hand. You can either purchase a handle or remove one from a handheld item that you no longer intend to use. If you are cutting a handle yourself, use a small hacksaw to complete the process.

    • 2

Screw the 15 cm flash bracket into the hard plastic end of the handle. The flash bracket should act as the top of a "T" across the handle.

    • 3

Attempt to wiggle the flash bracket after affixing it to the handle. Cold shoe mounts are fixed in place so, you will want to ensure the flash bracket is fixed in place atop the handle.

    • 4

Lock the camera flash into the top ridge of the flash bracket. As you are taking pictures, manually rotate the cold shoe mount to alter the direction of your flash.
