How to Make a Strawberry Cane of Polymer Clay

A strawberry cane made from polymer clay is a long tube that, when cut into slices, creates strawberries. Use them to make charms for necklaces, bracelets for earrings or add them to the decor in a doll house. Polymer clay is a malleable material, making it easy to work with. It comes in a variety of colors that can be used alone or mixed to create custom colors. Look for polymer clay at craft supply stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the colors for your strawberry cane. Cut a fresh strawberry in half to help you match the right colors and decide how to layer them. Mix colors if necessary to create a match. In this case, a range of red and pink colors will be the most authentic choices.

    • 2

Condition the polymer clay. Work it in your hands to make it soft and pliable. If you are using a large amount of polymer clay, condition it in batches and then smash the pieces back together when each is finished.

    • 3

Roll out the clay. Do each color separately and set aside while you do the others. Clean your rolling surface between each layer to prevent any crumbs from getting stuck in your next layer, which could alter the look for the finished strawberries.

    • 4

Layer the polymer clay. Use a fresh strawberry to guide you in terms of placement. Use the deeper reds at the bottom and move toward pink and white at the top.

    • 5

Roll the clay into a tube. Careful and slow movements allow you to keep the tube even from end to end, which will result in evenly sized strawberries. A larger tube will produce larger strawberries and a thinner one will make small fruits.

    • 6

Form the tube into a triangle with rounded corners. A strawberry isn't completely round, but tapers from top to bottom. Creating a triangle with your tube will produce strawberries that mimic the shape of real ones. Use your fingers to gently shape it from one end to the other.
