How to Build a Thick Textured Oil Paint

Oil paint imparts a distinctive texture when brushed on canvas. To create deeply textured strokes, build up the layer of paint as you're applying it to the canvas. Pre-mixing the oil paint is vital to successfully building up a thick texture. Hobby supplies are needed as are the tools common to artists doing an oil painting.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a dab of the oil paint to the palette. Mix the paint with a moderate-tipped brush until the color is smooth to the eye. Add a dab of yellow ocher to the paint that is already on the canvas. Mix it with a brush, until the color is a shade lighter.

    • 2

Apply linseed oil to a corner of a soft cloth. Rub the canvas from the upper-left corner across to the bottom-right corner. Then move 1 inch down the canvas, and rub the cloth against the canvas until you reach the left side. Reapply linseed oil to the corner of the cloth. Repeat this procedure of rubbing the linseed oil against the canvas, until you reach its lower-right corner.

    • 3

Dab paint on the brush. Apply a few brushstrokes to the canvas while applying a firm pressure at the tip.

    • 4

Apply three times the previous amount of oil paint to an unused section of the palette. Mix the paint with the brush, until the color is smooth and has a butter-like consistency.

    • 5

Apply the paint to the brush. Cover the existing brushstrokes on the canvas with broad strokes, while applying light pressure to the tip of the brush. Pick up more of the mixed paint from the palette, and apply it on top of the existing brushstrokes in the same manner -- to continue building a thick, textured layer of paint on the canvas.
