How to Glue a Gibson Guitar Neck

Intense sunlight or heat causes the wood in a guitar neck to eventually crack due to brittleness. Storing your Gibson guitar on a stand or in its case out of direct sunlight will help maintain the integrity of the wood. Still, if you have a crack in your guitar neck, you can repair it yourself and avoid costly repairs at a music shop.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Guitar wood glue
  • Small paintbrush
  • Paper towels
  • C-clamp
  • Fine-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Pluck one string and listen to the tone. Turn the peg for the string either slightly clockwise or counterclockwise and listen to the change in the tone. If the tone is higher, turn the peg in the opposite direction to loosen it. If the tone is lower, keep turning the peg in that direction to loosen the string. Pull the end of the string out of the peg and the other end of the string out of the bridge with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Repeat with each string.

Squeeze an ample amount of guitar wood glue onto the tip of a small paintbrush. Apply the glue into the crack and press the glue into the wood until the crack is full of glue and there is excess glue on the exterior of the crack.

    • 3

Place paper towels on the guitar neck to pad it and put a C-clamp on the guitar to hold the mended joint together. Let the glue dry for at least 24 hours.

Remove the C-clamp and paper towels from the guitar. Sand the excess glue off the mended area with fine-grit sandpaper. Restring the guitar and tune it.
