How to Convert a Pocket Watch to a Wristwatch

Converting pocket watches into wristwatches is not a new concept. While wristwatches are considered status symbols today, so were pocket watches considered status symbols for men 100 years ago. During the 19th century, however, soldiers discovered the usefulness of wristwatches during wartime and began converting their pocket watches into wristwatches for the sake of convenience and in order to keep their hands free during battle. These early wristwatches were called ̶0;trench watches.̶1; Today, the process of conversion is not much different than it was during World War I.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the wire lugs̵7; width at approximately 20 millimeters using the ruler, depending on the size of the pocket watch and the width of the straps. Generally, 20 mm is wide enough for most watches and watch straps.

    • 2

Cut two 24-mm pieces of wire using the wire cutter and bend 2 mm of the ends off each of the wires. Each bent end will be welded to the watch case to form lugs.

    • 3

Weld the bent ends of the wire with the laser welder, welding each piece of wire on either ends of the pocket watch, at 6 and 12 o̵7;clock. These welded wires create fixed lugs for the straps.

    • 4

Loop the open ends of the watch strap through the lugs on either side of the watch and glue (or sew) the straps closed. Be sure to use the proper kind of adhesive, one that is strong enough for leather or fabric.
