Girl Scout Bedroll Instructions

Aside from their famous cookie sales, Girl Scouts also spend time developing camping skills. By going on camping trips with their troop, girl scouts learn how to pack enough bedding to sleep comfortably outdoors. Making a bedroll is an essential skill each girl must develop. These packs ensure that bedding stays dry and can be transported easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down the plastic tarp flat. Lay the fleece blanket over it so it's covering only two-thirds of the tarp.

    • 2

Put the piece of foam bedding on top of the fleece blanket. It shouldn't exceed two-thirds the size of the plastic tarp.

    • 3

Fold the sleeping bag over the foam so it doesn't exceed two-thirds of the size of the plastic tarp. Place your pillow in the center of the pile.

    • 4

Fold the sides of the tarp in toward the center of the pile. You may use a heavy object to hold down the sides while you fold over the top and bottom flaps of the tarp.

    • 5

Roll from left to right as tightly as possible, pressing down on the bedding inside the roll as you go along.

    • 6

Tie a small piece of the end of the rope with a bowline knot. Slide the free end of the rope through the loop to create a larger loop. The larger loop only needs to be big enough for you to slide the bedroll in.

    • 7

Place the larger loop over the top of the bedroll, slide it down a few inches and cinch it. At the opposite end of the bedroll, hold the free rope a few inches from the bottom in your non-dominant hand and, with your dominant hand, make a lowercase "p." Pull the end of the rope at the "p" until it forms a larger loop. Slide the larger loop over the bottom end of the bed roll and pull the rope to cinch it.

    • 8

Flip over the bedroll. Bring the tail of the rope over and feed it underneath the horizontal rope tying the bedroll together, forming a cross with the rope. Bring the tail up and behind the vertical rope, then pull it taut to form a knot. Do this with the next horizontal rope closer to the bottom.

    • 9

Tie off the excess rope by flipping over the bedroll again and making a simple knot over the knot and loop.
