How Do You Find the Year on a Gibson Baldwin Spirit Electric Guitar?

The Baldwin Spirit was an electric guitar manufactured by Gibson in the mid 1980s. It was manufactured under the Gibson Baldwin Educational nameplate. While older model Gibson's can be somewhat difficult to identify, the company turned to a standard serialization process after 1977. In order to order specific parts, like pickups, it might become necessary to know the year of your Gibson model. Identifying the year on Gibson can be done through a little bit of investigative work.

Instructions

    • 1

Look on the head stock, on the rear neck, for the eight-character Gibson serial number.

    • 2

Remove the back plate with a screwdriver, if the serial number cannot be found on the head stock, and locate the serial number on the inside near the pickup springs.

    • 3

Read the serial number to determine the year of the guitar. Gibson's eight-character pattern is as follows: "YDDDYRRR" with the "Y" being the production year; "D" being the date of the year; and "RRR" being the production facility where the guitar was made. The two Y's would make up the last two digits for the year. For example, the number 70108276 would place the guitar as being made in 1978.
