How to Make a Homemade Log Splitter Out of a Garden Tractor

A garden tractor becomes a multipurpose tool when it is fitted with a log-splitter, with which you can chop fallen tree limbs and make quick firewood. The task is time-consuming and expensive; however, those who suffer from back or knee pain will find that the garden tractor log-splitter saves hours of excruciating work in the long run. Individuals with some knowledge of machinery and welding will benefit for years from this homemade tractor attachment.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch metal flat plate
  • Measuring tape
  • Metal saw
  • Welding torch
  • Three-point hitch
  • Wedge

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your tractor's lift arms and cut a section of flat plate to those measurements using a metal saw. Set the flat plate aside.

    • 2

Cut a section of flat plate to dimensions of 36 inches in length and the same width as the flat-plate section you cut in the previous step. Weld this piece perpendicular to the first piece to create a T-shape.

    • 3

Cut two additional pieces that are 10 inches long and 10 inches across each. Cut the pieces into two scalene triangles of equal size by slicing through the plate from one corner to its diagonal opposite corner.

    • 4

Prop the four pieces you cut in the previous step against either flat edge of the 36-inch-long section so that the long edges of the triangle form "V" shapes on each side of the 36-inch section and the assembly resembles a star with six points. Weld the triangles to the 36-inch section to reinforce the connection at the T-joint.

    • 5

Attach the assembly to the tractor arms and the three-point hitch and drive to the wood that requires splitting.

    • 6

Insert a wedge into the wood that needs to be split. Raise the attachment to the tractor arms' full height and position the arm directly over the wedge. Drop the arms at full speed so that the full force of the attachment is directed onto the wedge. Repeat if necessary.
