How to Make a Freeheel Remover With Two Prongs

The freewheel of a bicycle is attached to the hub in the center of the rear wheel. The gear cluster that surrounds the freewheel is called the cassette. Removing the cassette and freewheel from your bike requires a freewheel remover -- also known as a chain whip. Make your own two-pronged freewheel remover using a scrap piece of wood and a spare bike chain.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-by-1 board
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Handsaw
  • Circular saw
  • Bike chain
  • Screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Electrical tape
  • Duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the 1-by-1 piece of wood to 14 inches long, and make a cut mark on the wood with a pencil. Cut the wood to this length by using a handsaw or a circular saw.

    • 2

Measure 1 inch from one end of the cut piece of 1-by-1, and make a mark with the pencil. Lay the bike chain next to the cut piece of 1-by-1. Count seven links on the chain, and make a mark on the wood.

    • 3

Drill a 1/2-inch hole into the top of the cut piece of 1-by-1 on the two pencil marks. Lay the bike chain on top of the cut piece of 1-by-1. Align the first link of the chain over the drilled hole on the end. Place a screw into the link of the chain, and tighten with the screwdriver.

    • 4

Count eight to nine links down the chain. Align the eighth or ninth link over the second hole drilled into the wood. Place another screw into the link of the chain, and tighten with the screwdriver.

    • 5

Wrap the bottom of the freewheel remover with electrical tape or duct tape, so you can grip the handle.
