How to Convert Chrome to a Brushed Nickel Finish

Objects that are conductive to electricity, like chrome, can be resurfaced by metal through electroplating. The object being refashioned is the cathode; the metal is the anode. During the electroplating process, the anode and cathode are placed in a specially formulated chemical electroplating solution and connected to the positive and negative charged connections of a low-voltage power source. The electrical pulse coupled with the chemical properties in the liquid cause a layer of the anode to be deposited on the surface of the cathode. Knowing how to do this is an affordable way to change the physical appearance of metal.

Things You'll Need

  • Beaker
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Metal with brushed nickel finish
  • 9-volt power supply with alligator clips

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase nickel plating solution from a retailer of electroplating kits and supplies.

    • 2

Avoid accidental contact between the solution and the eyes or skin by wearing laboratory-approved goggles and gloves.

    • 3

Pour enough nickel plating solution into the beaker to fully submerse the cathode. Ensure that the beaker is spacious enough to fit both the anode and the cathode without either object touching. Otherwise, dark staining or an uneven coating may appear on the cathode.

    • 4

Connect the positive charged alligator clip to the anode and the negative charged alligator clip to the cathode. Place both objects into the beaker. Plug the power supply into the nearest outlet.

    • 5

Leave the cathode immersed in the solution until it assumes the physical properties of the metal being plated onto it. This can be monitored by looking through the beaker or occasionally removing the cathode from the solution and visually examining it.
