Tutorial on Fill Flash for the Nikon D5000

Fill-flash is a technique that allows you to use flash in situations where flash is not normally automatically enabled by your camera. By using fill-flash, you can make your photographs pop as well as reduce contrast and fill in shadows. The Nikon D5000 has a dedicated flash system known as CLS that makes it simple for you to use fill-flash on any photograph you want. There is a setting on your Nikon D5000 that actually makes it easier for you to use the fill-flash technique.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your camera and put it into the "Manual" mode.

    • 2

Select the "Flash Control" option. You will be presented with several choices.

    • 3

Select the "i-TTL Balance Fill-Flash for Digital SLR" setting to use fill-flash for a better balance between the background and the subject. Select the "Standard i-TTL Fill-Flash for Digital SLR" setting if you do not care so much about the background and want to focus only on the subject, or when you are using exposure compensation.
