DIY Welded Wood Heaters

Build your own welded wood heater when camping or staying at a cabin. Use a spare 55-gallon drum or a steel barrel that has a removable top. Welds will be necessary to secure pieces of the heater together. However, any drum or barrel that you want to use will need to be clean and free of any flammable contaminants

Things You'll Need

  • Steel barrel with removable top
  • 2-inch metal tubing
  • Felt-tip marker
  • Chop saw
  • Power drill
  • 3/8-inch drill bit
  • Jig saw

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the 2-inch metal tubing to a length of 10 inches and make a mark with the felt-tip marker. Cut the tubing to this size with a chop saw. Repeat this step to cut three additional 10-inch lengths from the 2-inch metal tubing.

    • 2

Drill a hole above the top band on a 55-gallon drum with your power drill using a 3/8-inch drill bit. Cut around the drum using a jig saw or a reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade.

    • 3

Verify that the removable top will fit in the new bottom section of the drum.

    • 4

Measure a 10-inch by 10-inch square on the front of the barrel with a tape measure and string. Mark the corners of the square with a felt-tip marker. Drill a hole at each corner using the power drill. Make a cut between each hole with the jig saw. This cut piece of metal will be the door.

    • 5

Weld one side of a hinge onto the left side of the door with the welder. Weld the other end of the hinge onto the left side of the hole that you cut out of the barrel.

    • 6

Measure and cut a small rectangle below the door measuring 2 inches long and 4 inches wide. Weld the draft door bracket over this hole.

    • 7

Trace the diameter of the 4-inch metal pipe onto the removable top. Cut a hole into the top and weld the 4-inch metal pipe in place. This will be the vent stack.

    • 8

Weld the four, 10-inch cut pieces of 2-inch tubing onto the bottom of the barrel for the legs.
