Instructions for a Sorby Wobble Chuck

The Robert Sorby Wobble Chuck, designed for use in wood lathes or engine lathes, enables a woodworker to turn wood off-center. As the billet attached to the chuck spins off-center, this allows you to fashion customized wooden items not possible using a standard concentric chuck. The instructions for attaching and setting up the Sorby Wobble Chuck are straightforward.

Things You'll Need

  • Wood lathe or engine lathe
  • Wood billet
  • Allen wrench set

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the open end of the Wobble Chuck over the jaws on your lathe. This chuck accommodates jaws up to 2 inches in diameter. Tighten the jaws on the lathe to secure the chuck in place.

    • 2

Thread the wooden billet onto the long screw protruding from the face of the Wobble Chuck -- which has two additional screw holes. If desired, you can secure the wooden billet onto the threaded screw and then drive two additional screws through the holes in the face of the Wobble Chuck and into the wooden billet.

    • 3

Locate the grub screws on the side of the Wobble Chuck, and turn them with an Allen wrench. The grub screws slide the front of the chuck off-center. The amount of movement depends on how many times you turn the screws. There are no set measurements, as the movement of grub screws is entirely trial and error.

    • 4

Turn on the lathe and position the cutting tool against the wooden billet. Since the billet spins off-center, the tool will cut more material from one side of the billet than the other. This is by design -- to create customized cuts with the chuck.
