How to Make a Type 14 Paper Nambu

Japanese soldiers used the Nambu-type semi-automatic handgun, created by a Japanese general, during World War II. You can fold sheets of paper into shapes that mimic the appearance of the type 14 Nambu handgun. You will need supplies from a stationary store or crafts shop as well as tools found around the house. The Nambu-type handgun you will make does not fire any projectiles, so is safe to have around the house.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place one of the 8-inch-by-10-inch sheets of gray paper horizontally on a table. Roll the side farthest from you over to the side closest to you to form a tube. Tape the ends and the middle with a strip of cellophane tape each. Repeat this procedure with another gray sheet of paper.

    • 2

Hold one of the tubes up. Measure down 1 inch from the top with the ruler. Cut a 1/2-inch deep slit in the tube at the 1 inch mark with a scissors. Repeat this procedure 1 1/2 inches down from the slit cut. Pull the two flaps out from the tube and cut them off with the scissors.

    • 3

Hold the other tube up. Measure down 1 inch from the top of the tube. Cut through the tube at the 1-inch mark with the scissors.

    • 4

Place both of the tubes horizontally on the table with the shorter tube beneath the other. Line up the left ends of the tubes. Rotate the tube farthest from you so that the cut slit is facing away from you. Tape the ends of the two tubes together with a strip of masking tape. Tape the end of the shorter tube to the other with a strip of cellophane tape.

    • 5

Place another sheet of gray paper horizontally on the table. Place the taped tubes horizontally against the side of the gray paper closest to you. Roll the side of the gray paper around the tubes. Tape the tube closed on both ends and the middle with strips of cellophane tape.

    • 6

Draw an outline on the outside of the tube where you feel the cut slit by pressing against it with your fingers. Pull the two tubes out from inside the tube you have just made.

    • 7

Cut out the outline drawn on the tube you have just made with the blade of a utility knife. Slide the tubes back into the tube you have just cut so that the cut out slits line up.

    • 8

Place another sheet of the gray paper on the table vertically. Roll the end closest to your up to form a tube. Tape the ends and middle of the tube with strips of cellophane tape. Measure five inches from an end of the tube. Cut through the tube at the five inch mark with the scissors.

    • 9

Hold the cut tube up. Cut across the top end of the tube at a slight angle with the scissors. Insert the angled cut end of the tube into the slit on the other tube. Tape the two tubes where they meet with strips of cellophane tape. Hold your paper Nambu-style Type 14 gun by the short tube which is now the gun handle so that the longer end of the tube is facing away from you.
