How to Repair a Tanaka Boat's Motor

At the very heart of a motorboat's operation is a working motor. It provides the thrust, the movement and, via the attached fins, the direction of the boat. Tanaka-USA is an experienced maker of boat motors, but even its experience does not ensure a foolproof product. You still may be afflicted by problems ranging from the inconvenient to the catastrophic, and you could save yourself some cash if you know how to deal with the problem yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the motor is at the proper level of tilt if the boat is pushed to an uneven keel when you start it. If the motor is tilted too far inward the bow can dangerously dig into high waves. A 12- to 15-degree tilt is recommended by Tanaka-USA.

    • 2

Thoroughly clean the fins and external surfaces of the motor of dust and debris. You should also wipe any oil deposits clear. These issues are often responsible for improper cooling and subsequent overheating that can cause the motor to shut down.

    • 3

Replace the shear pin if the motor is running, but the boat is not moving. To replace the shear pin, remove the cotter pin, which holds the propeller against the shear pin. Slide the shear pin out, lubricate the shaft with a little lithium grease, and slide the replacement pin in. Replace the cotter pin.
