Bottling Your Own Perfume

Perfume has existed for thousands of years and in various forms, from solid to liquid and from oil-based to alcohol-based, as a substance to improve someone's scent. Bottling perfume at home does not require special equipment, and the quality of the ingredients is only dependent on personal budget and preference.
  1. Equipment

    • Equipment needed to bottle perfume includes dark-colored bottles with sealable lids, nonreactive mixing bowls, measuring tools and labels. Also needed is a way to sterilize the bottles before placing the perfume into them. Once the perfume ingredients have been mixed and the bottles have been sterilized, the perfume can be added to the bottles and sealed.

    Storing

    • Another thing needed to make perfume is a dark, dry place that can be kept cool. Such a place is where freshly made perfume is left to have the ingredients blend.

    Ingredients

    • Ingredients for making perfume include scent ingredients and a carrier -- something to mix the scent ingredients into. Examples of scent ingredients include fragrance oils and essential oils and examples of a carrier ingredient include jojoba oil and vodka. Be aware of how much essential oil you add to your perfume, as it is concentrated and health problems can arise if you apply too much to your skin. Fixatives such as glycerin may be added to the perfume in order to make the perfume evaporate less quickly. However, if essential oils are used, fixatives are not needed.

    Successes, Failures

    • Keep notes as an important way to successfully discover good perfumes. This will enable you to keep track of successes and failures. Making small batches of perfume and finding out how they smell over time is another way of discovering a good perfume.

    Perfume Knowledge

    • Although recipes for perfumes do not have to be strictly adhered to, knowledge of perfumery can be important for creating a stunning perfume. One example of perfumery knowledge is that of the ̶0;notes̶1; of a perfume, which are the base note, the middle note and the top note. The base note is the scent ingredient that lasts longer than the middle note, and the middle note is the scent ingredient that lasts longer than the top note but less than the base note.
