Things You'll Need
Instructions
Prepare the sculpture for painting by cleaning it with water and a clean toothbrush. Sand any drips or imperfections in the clay, using fine-grit sandpaper.
Prime and protect the sculpture by applying a clear primer over the surface of the sculpture, using a paintbrush. Make sure to work primer into any nooks or corners. Because primer creates a surface that paint can adhere to, any missed areas won̵7;t hold paint as well, and they will look different from the primed areas. You can also use spray primer, if desired.
Add a few tablespoons of paint to a plastic plate, followed by a small bit of water. Mix the water in thoroughly. This thins the paint, which allows it to flow more smoothly over the surface of the clay. If you want just a wash of color over the sculpture, add more water. For darker color, use less water.
Paint the base color over the sculpture using a foam brush. The color should be even and free from drips or streaks. Use a cloth to wipe any thick areas or drips and repaint the area. Allow the base coat to dry.
Paint a second and third coat on the sculpture, allowing each coat to dry completely, until you have reached the desired level of color. Multiple thin coats of paint are preferable to one thick coat.
Paint details on the sculpture in the desired color, using a small or medium paintbrush, depending on the size of area that needs to be covered. Do not dilute the detail paint unless you want just a light wash of color over the clay.
Spray the entire sculpture with a clear acrylic paint or a paint protectant. Choose a glossy finish if you desire a plastic-like finish, or use a matte finish of you prefer a more natural look.
