Insert the block of metal that will use to make the thread into the chuck on your lathe. Tighten the jaws of the chuck with the chuck key.
Reduce the material to the outer diameter of the thread with the cutting tool. The outer diameter will be the head of the thread. Verify the diameter of the reduced material by using the caliper. The result is a rod that is the outer diameter of the thread.
Stop the lathe and set it to its neutral gear. Insert the die for the thread into a threading handle. Place the threading handle on the end of the metal rod on the lathe.
Turn the handle of the threading handle clockwise to cut grooves into the thread. Repeat this step to cut the remainder of the thread.
