How to Build a Taper Attachment

A taper attachment is an accessory for a lathe that is designed to make an inside or outside taper on your work. The attachment acts as a base for the project that can be adjusted to the required taper. To do this you will need to create the attachment from various parts. You can find the parts needed for your project at a local home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the 6-inch metal plate for the mounting holes on your lathe with a felt-tip marker. Drill holes into the metal plate with the drill press.

    • 2

Measure the 1-inch diameter steel pipe to 3 inches with the tape measure. Cut pipe to this length with a chop saw, or use a band saw. Measure down half an inch from the top of the cut piece of pipe and drill a quarter-inch hole.

    • 3

Measure and cut a piece of the 2-inch angle iron to a length of 12 inches. Mark the center at the bottom of the angle iron.

    • 4

Measure 3 inches from one side of the angle iron and make a mark. Measure from the other side of the angle iron to 4 inches and make a mark. Drill a half-inch hole through the angle iron on these marks by using the drill press.

    • 5

Measure half inch on the perpendicular edge of the angle iron that you measured to 4 inches. Drill a quarter-inch hole at this location.

    • 6

Weld the 3-inch piece of steel pipe onto the angle iron. The angle iron needs to sit on the steep pipe at a 90 degree angle.

    • 7

Position the 1-inch pipe flange on the center of the 6-inch metal plate. Weld the flange to the plate. You can also drill holes and secure the flange with 1/4-inch bolts and nuts.

    • 8

Insert the angle iron with the steep pipe attached into the pipe flange. Insert a 1/4-inch bolt into the hole in the steel pipe. Tighten the wrench to lock the angle iron into position.
