How to Make an Aquarium Cover

An aquarium can be an expensive investment for a first-timer. An aquarium cover helps protect that investment because it protects your aquarium from the outside world, including dust, dirt and other pollutants. If you want to save some money on your aquarium cover and have a flair for DIY, you can create an aquarium cover at home in less than two hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 1/2-inch-thick plywood, sized for your aquarium
  • Saw
  • 150-grit-sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top of the aquarium with a measuring tape. Add 1 inch to the length and width measurements and write the final figures down on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Saw a rectangular piece of plywood in the length and width you just calculated. Name this "Piece 1" with a pencil.

    • 3

Saw two pieces of plywood with the same length as the shortest side on Piece 1 and a width of 4 inches. Name these "Piece 2" and Piece 3" with a pencil.

    • 4

Saw another two pieces of plywood with the same length as the longest side on Piece 1 and a width of 4 inches. Name these "Piece 4" and "Piece 5" with a pencil.

    • 5

Sandpaper the edges on each piece of wood. Paint each piece of wood liberally with a waterproof sealant.

    • 6

Form a three-dimensional box out of the pieces by balancing Piece 1 on top of Pieces 2, 3, 4 and 5.

    • 7

Hammer a nail into each corner of Piece 1 to attach it securely to the other pieces of wood.

    • 8

Turn the aquarium cover over. Paint the inside of the cover with white paint. This will act as to reduce light reflection.

    • 9

Leave the paint to dry overnight.
