How to Build a Wood Dust Cyclone Fiber Bin

A wood dust cyclone is a device that uses a centrifugal fan to vacuum dust from wood working activities such as cutting, sawing or sanding. As the centrifugal fan brings the particles into the device, a cyclone is used to push the heavier fibers and dust particles to the sides while the air moves in a different direction and is vented out as clean air. The fibers lose velocity and drop into a bin.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal garbage can with a lid
  • Electric jig saw with a metal cutting bit
  • (2) Hand clamps
  • Tape measure

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the diameter of the bottom of the dust cyclone. This is typically 4 inches and will have a metal ring for support. Draw a 4-inch diameter circle on the top center of a garbage can lid.

    • 2

Cut out the circle using the jig saw. Ensure that there are no jagged edges.

    • 3

Place the lid back on the can and secure the lid to the can sides using two hand clamps. The clamps should be on opposite sides from each other.

    • 4

Position the garbage can under the bottom of the cyclone ring. The ring should fit inside the hole on the lid at least 1 to 2 inches. If the hole is too small, cut a little more out of the hole using the saw. Since the pressure at the bottom of the cyclone is negligible, sealing the connection is not necessary. Once the can is full, remove the clamps from the lid and dispose of the waste.
