DIY Diffusion Screen Photography

When describing photographic light sources, bright light, like direct sunlight, is referred to as a ̶0;small̶1; light source whereas soft light, such as under the shade of a tree, is considered a ̶0;large̶1; light source. The paradox results from strong direct light casting dark shadows on a subject, whereas diffused light casts a softer light that spreads out to cover the subject evenly. To soften harsh lighting professional photographers place diffusion screens between the light source and subject; you can achieve the same effects with a simple and effective do-it-yourself diffusion screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a piece of white cloth, such as a cotton sheet or muslin, out smoothly on a table. Lay a plastic hula-hoop on top of the cloth.

    • 2

Trace a circular mark on the cloth, 3 inches around the outside of the hoop, with a pencil. Cut out the pattern on the cloth with a pair of scissors.

    • 3

Center the hoop in the middle of the cloth. Apply a liberal coating of contact cement, approved for cloth and plastic, to the section of cloth lying on the outside of the hoop and to the outside and top edges of the hoop.

    • 4

Work the cloth up and over the outside edge of the hoop and then down and over the inside of the hoop. Tack the cloth to the hoop with cellophane tape until the cement has cured.
