How to Restring an Anneal Line

Annealing metal is the process of heating metal to reduce its internal stress. This is a technique that you can use when attaching strings of metal when making jewelry. If the metal string for a piece of jewelry becomes detached when you are hammering, repairs can be made by annealing the metal. Metals used in jewelry that can be annealed include gold, silver and copper.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the end of the metal that you need to anneal with the soldering flux. The flux is available in a paste or a liquid and is used to prevent the oxidation of the metal.

    • 2

Put on the work gloves and turn on the propane torch. Hold the metal in the flame using a pair of pliers.

    • 3

Continue to heat the metal until it appears bright red in color. When the metal becomes bright red it has reached the annealing temperature.

    • 4

Dip the heated metal into the pickle solution which cleans oxidation that is present on the metal.

    • 5

Rinse the pickle solution off of the metal with water and dry it with a clean cloth.

    • 6

Repeat this process if you have breaks or a string of metal becomes detached when making your pieces of jewelry.
