How to Clean a Model Airplane Engine

Model planes come in many different varieties, with some actually containing working engines for use with remote controls. These engines work like larger engines; they are just on a smaller scale. Caring for these engines requires similar techniques as those required for caring for a car engine or larger plane engine. You can keep the engine clean by only using clean oil inside the tank and giving the entire engine a soaking cleaning every five or six years.

Things You'll Need

  • Small screwdriver
  • Ratchet set
  • Large steel pot
  • Non-scented dish washer soap powder
  • Tongs
  • Engine oil
  • Soft cloths
  • Model plane fuel

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the engine from the model airplane using screwdrivers or a ratchet set.

    • 2

Fill a steel pot with water. Place the pot on the stove to boil.

    • 3

Place two tablespoons of powdered dish liquid into the water. Take care to add the soap slowly or else the pot will boil over. Do not use lemon-scented soap.

    • 4

Place the engine in the water. Allow the engine to stay in the water for about one minute. Remove the engine with tongs.

    • 5

Dry the engine with a soft cloth. Wipe down the surface of the engine with engine oil to prevent the metal from rusting.

    • 6

Replace the engine back inside the model plane. Run the engine at full throttle until the fuel runs out. Fill the engine tank with oil again and refuel the plane tank. Run the engine for about 10 minutes to distribute the oil inside the tank and prevent rusting.
