How to Repair a Core Drill

A core drill is a highly specialized but useful power tool. It can extract cylinder-shaped samples of materials such as wood or metal, leaving behind a hollow core. You will need to maintain your core drill properly to keep it in good working order. Problems that may require repair include blunt drill bits and excessive torque.

  Flush the drill hole clear of debris and increase water ʂ58;ow if there is sediment inside which is impeding normal operation. This should also fix any problems you may be having with your core drill overheating.

  Fix excess vibration by sharpening the core drill bits. Use an electric bench grinder with a diamond-grinding wheel in order to properly sharpen the hardy (usually diamond) drill bits that the core drill uses. This is vital; the core drill will not function properly without sharp drill bits.

  Inspect the key moving parts in the core drill, particularly the spindle, bearings, rollers and carriage guides. If these parts are damaged, not centered or there is excessive wear then have the parts replaced by a certified dealer.
