How to Convert an Air Chair to Foil Board

Many water sports enthusiasts enjoy coasting across a lake or ocean on traditional water skis, but there are plenty of other options available. One such option is hydrofoil equipment such as the Air Chair. Riders sit on a seat attached to a board with a long rod extending down into the water column. A boat pulls the rider along, letting the board rise out of the water for a faster experience. Some hydrofoil riders are converting their Air Chairs to a foil board configuration, negating the need for the standard seat. The foil board resembles a snowboard with a long, protruding rod underneath.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws holding the Air Chair's seat to the board's surface with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Pull the seat off the board. Fill the open holes with caulk. Let the caulk dry.

    • 3

Remove the screws holding the foot bindings to the front of the board with a screwdriver. Repeat step 2 for binding removal and caulking.

    • 4

Stand on the board, much like a skateboarder. Trace the outline of the feet with a pencil for positioning the future foil board bindings.

    • 5

Step down from the board. Drill four holes for each foot binding screw into the board, using a power drill.

    • 6

Secure the screws into the bindings and board surface with the screwdriver. Add nuts to the screws' ends, under the board, to prevent the screws from backing out.

    • 7

Test the foil board in the water. Adjust the foot bindings, if necessary. The rider should be able to crouch and stand comfortably while attached to the foot bindings.
