How to Make Your Own Homemade Fighting Belts for Fishing

Fishing becomes more of an endurance test than relaxation when you go deep-sea fishing. The fishing pole must be connected to you, and in turn, you must be connected to the chair to keep from being pulled overboard. Make your own homemade fighting belt that will keep you and the rod safely in the boat. Supplies from a crafts shop and a hardware store will be needed, along with tools that can also be acquired from the hardware store.

Things You'll Need

  • Aluminum plate, 14 inches by 8 inches by 4 inches
  • Tape measure
  • Grease pencil
  • Protractor
  • Power drill, 1/4-inch drill bit
  • Foam rubber sheet, 20 inches by 20 inches by 2 inches

Instructions

    • 1

Place the aluminum plate on a work surface. Make a dot on the plate with a grease pencil at the halfway mark both horizontally and vertically using a tape measure. Find the intersection between the two dots and make an X mark at this point.

    • 2

Measure out 3 inches from each side of the X mark and make a dot on the plate with the grease pencil. Draw a circle inside the two side dots using the protractor. Drill a hole through each dot with a power drill. Measure 1 inch down from each hole just made and drill another hole with the power drill.

    • 3

Place the foam rubber sheet on a work surface. Place the aluminum plate on the sheet. Draw an outline around the plate on the sheet with a grease pencil. Place the plate aside. Cut out the outline with a utility knife.

    • 4

Place the plate face down on the work surface. Apply bonding glue to the left and right edges, top and bottom edges and irregularly along the length of the plate while avoiding the area where the holes have been cut. Line up the cut foam rubber with the plate. Press the rubber against the plate and hold it there for two minutes. Let the glue set overnight.

    • 5

Turn the plate over. Run the ends of a metal ̶0;U̶1; hook through each pair of horizontal holes on the plate. Turn the plate over. Screw a metal nut on each end of each ̶0;U̶1; hook until resistance is felt. Tighten each nut with a full clockwise turn with a pliers.

    • 6

Measure 2 inches in from each corner of the plate and make a dot with the grease pencil. Measure 1 inch down from each dot at the top of the plate and 1 inch up from each dot on the bottom of the plate and make another dot.

    • 7

Drill a hole through each dot with the power drill. Run the ends of a metal ̶0;U̶1; through each pair of vertically placed holes. Turn the plate over so the front is again facing you. Screw a metal nut on each end of each ̶0;U̶1; hook until resistance is felt. Tighten each nut with a full clockwise turn with a pliers.

    • 8

Measure 3 inches in from each corner of the plate and make a dot with the grease pencil. Measure 1 inch across from each dot and make another dot. Drill a hole through each dot with the power drill. Run the ends of a metal ̶0;U̶1; through each pair of horizontally placed holes. Turn the plate over so the front is again facing you. Screw a metal nut on each end of each ̶0;U̶1; hook until resistance is felt. Tighten each nut with a full clockwise turn with a pliers.

    • 9

Turn the plate over. Run a web belt through the vertical ̶0;U̶1; hooks at the top of the plate. Run a web belt through the vertical ̶0;U̶1; hooks at the bottom of the plate. Snap the metal end at one end of each web belt that will go around your waist into the buckle to lock it.

    • 10

Run the end of a web belt through the horizontal ̶0;U̶1; hooks at the top of the plate. Run the end of a web belt through the horizontal ̶0;U̶1; hooks at the bottom of the plate. Snap the metal end at one end of each web belt that will go around the fishing chair into the buckle to lock it.
