How to Put Together a CM Columbus McKinnon 3/4 Ton 646 Chain Hoist

The CM 646 chain hoist is an ideal tool to have if you need to lift heavy objects on a regular basis. The hoist is capable of lifting objects weighing up to 1,500 pounds and is equipped with a braking mechanism to prevent the lifting of objects that exceed the hoist̵7;s rated weight limits. Assembly is required if you recently disassembled the hoist for repair and cleaning. The assembly process may take an hour or more.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the brake components of the hoist. Place two friction washers on each side of the ratchet. Insert the friction hub through the back of the ratchet, against the washers and ratchet. Make sure the teeth on the ratchet face toward the direction of the pawl.

    • 2

Assemble the load limiter by adding a small amount of stay-put lubricant onto the friction hub. Place two friction washers on each side of the hand wheel. Insert the hub through the back of the hand wheel and place the steel washer, spring washer, lock washer and adjuster nut against the thread on the end of the hub.

    • 3

Hand-tighten the adjuster nut, then turn the nut clockwise one notch. Enclose the components inside of the hoist casing. Attach the top hook to the top of the hoist casing. Tighten the hoist hanger screw, then back off one-sixth of a turn. Make sure the top hook is free to swivel.

    • 4

Attach 20 inches of wire onto the loose end of the load chain. Feed the wire through and around the lift wheel until the first link of the chain starts over it. Start the chain over the hand wheel, then pull the hand chain in the hoisting direction until 2 feet of load chain passes over the lift wheel.

Remove the wire and connect the loose end of the chain to the hoist, using the loose end's screw and washer. Attach the lower hook onto the load end of the load chain. Attach the top hook on the chain hoist onto the metal loop underneath the hoisting support.
