How to Make an Aged Looking Background Painting Canvas

Whether you're painting still life or any other form of artwork, the look of your canvas will directly affect the overall finished look of your painting. If you want to create a period painting or one that looks old and distressed, you can alter the canvas in a number of ways to give it an aged look.

Instructions

    • 1

Make tea and pour it into a bowl. Dip your brush into the tea and brush it onto the canvas. The more tea you put onto the canvas, the more aged it will look. Let the canvas dry.

    • 2

Use a knife or sharp blade to place small holes around the sides of the canvas. Use the blade to fray the edges of the canvas.

    • 3

Get a wire brush and brush it over the canvas lightly. Do not brush too hard because you will damage the canvas. Lightly brushing the canvas will place small scores into the canvas and will make it look aged.

    • 4

Use a brush to apply a layer of varnish to the canvas. Allow the varnish to dry, and it will begin cracking. Use a fan bush to apply a layer of gold paint to the canvas. This will highlight the cracks and make the canvas look old.
