Shielded
Shield bearings are the most common type of skateboard bearings, as most over-the-counter boards are equipped with them. This type of bearing keeps large pieces of dirt and debris from finding their way into your board's wheel casings. In addition, shielded bearings are very easy to remove from your board and clean.
Sealed
Unlike shielded bearings, sealed skateboard bearings offer your board's wheels watertight protection. As a result, your wheels will be far less susceptible to dirt buildup than wheels that feature shielded bearings. Keep in mind, however, that they are more difficult to remove and more expensive to replace than their shielded counterparts.
Teflon-Sealed
If looking for substantial protection against dirt, dust and water damage, consider equipping your board with Teflon-sealed bearings. A variation of traditional sealed bearings, these bearings are coated in Teflon, making them impervious to the elements. This type of bearing is also very long-lasting and seldom needs to be cleaned.
Rubber-Sealed
In much the same fashion as Teflon-sealed bearings, rubber-sealed bearings provide your wheels with a fair amount of protection against the elements, particularly water. In addition to being slightly less expensive than Teflon-sealed bearings, they should more than meet the needs of any skateboarder who steers clear of rough terrain.
Ceramic
Skateboarders who frequently navigate their boards through rocky terrain will want to get their hands on some sturdy ceramic bearings. These bearings are very resistant to excessive heat, powerful shocks and corrosion. Ceramic bearings are also ideal for speed boarders, as they offer very low rolling resistance and fast acceleration.
