How to Make Instruments Out of Kitchen Utensils

Making instruments out of kitchen utensils can be a great activity for creative children who love music. It promotes creativity and improvisation. Using pots and pans to create sounds can teach them that music lies everywhere. Your children can experiment with these utensils and put on live shows in your home. Without spending money on expensive guitars and drum sets, they can create their own band by just combining a few unlikely items from your cupboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lid off a large plastic container. Wrap rubber bands around the container so the rubber bands stretch across the open top. The rubber bands can be used as guitar strings to create music.

    • 2

Hold the handles of two pot lids and bang them together to use as cymbals.

    • 3

Make drum sets out of wooden spoons, plastic bowls and buckets. Alternate tapping the wooden spoon against the plastic bowl and bucket in order to blend sounds and create a melody.

    • 4

Use metal knives, forks or spoons to create beats on different sized glass jars as if playing a xylophone.

    • 5

Hold up a cutting board or a pan and softly tap your knuckles against the surface to create a rhythm.

    • 6

Place metal knives, forks and spoons inside of a large glass jar, put the lid on and shake as if using a tambourine.
