How to Turn a Standard Bench Plane Into a Low Angle Plane

Angling the blade as it protrudes from the bottom of the plane is the difference between a standard bench plane and a low angle bench plane. A standard bench has an angle around 75 degrees, which makes it good for planing rough dimensions because it takes a lot off very quickly. For detailed planing, a low angle plane's angle of around 45 degrees allows the plane to cut thinner slices of wood. Converting your standard bench plane to a low angle bench plane is simple.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the two screws that secure the rear handle to the plane with a screwdriver. The screws go through the bottom of the plane.

    • 2

Place the shorter handle onto the plane and then secure it with the original screws. If you choose, you can opt to cut approximately 2 inches off the height of the handle instead of purchasing a shorter handle.

    • 3

Loosen the screws that secure the planer iron to the frog and then place the iron off to the side. The planer iron is the blade and the frog is the angled metal plate that mounts to the planer.

    • 4

Remove the screws that secure the frog to the base of the planer and then place the low angle frog onto the base of the planer. Secure the low angle frog to the planer with the original screws.

    • 5

Place the planer iron onto the frog and line up the hole on the frog with the hole in the iron. Secure the iron to the frog with the original screw.
