How to Wind an Oil-Filled Transformer

Oil-filled transformers are used extensively in high power distribution applications. These transformers submerge the primary and secondary winding coils in an oil solution that helps remove the excess heat generated during normal operation. This helps extend the life of the winding insulation and the transformer. During transformer maintenance or a rebuild, it may be necessary to rewind the coils and re-install them in the transformer. This requires a lot of time and patience.

Things You'll Need

  • Magnetic wire
  • Transformer core
  • Transformer housing
  • Transformer oil solution

Instructions

    • 1

Take one of the two ends of the iron core and proceed with winding the magnetic wire around that piece of the core. This will form the primary winding. Oil-filled transformers usually have the primary and secondary windings on two different ends of the core to allow for better cooling of each winding.

    • 2

Begin winding another set of magnetic wire around the second end of the core. This will form the secondary winding. These coils are wound outside of the transformer before they are submerged in oil.

    • 3

Lower the windings and the core into the transformer housing. Begin filling the transformer housing with oil. Fill it slowly to reduce air bubbles. Once filled, allow approximately 24 hours for air bubbles to surface.
