How to Close Balisong Using Basic Horizontal

A balisong, or "butterfly knife," is a folding pocket knife with two handles attached to the base of a single blade that can be opened and closed with one hand. You can also perform tricks with a balisong where you open and close the knife using a special technique that adds visual flair. One of the simplest opening/closing techniques is called the basic horizontal and involves flipping the knife open or closed in a horizontal arc.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the open balisong knife by the safe handle with your thumb and forefinger with the edge of the blade facing away from the palm of your hand. Balisong knives have a "safe" handle and a "bite" handle. The "bite" handle typically has the closing latch on the end, while the "safe" handle does not have the latch.

    • 2

Throw the bite handle out in a horizontal arc away from your body and allow the safe handle to rotate in your palm. The blade and bite handle should be hanging down.

    • 3

Throw the bite handle out again in a horizontal arc away from your body and allows the bite handle to hit the back of your hand.

    • 4

Swing the bite handle back toward your body in a horizontal arc while simultaneously moving your finger out of the way, allowing the bite handle and safe handle to click together in your palm.

    • 5

Close your fingers over the bite and safe handles to complete the basic horizontal close.
