How to Do Fake Etching

You can do fake etching by applying a laminating film. This creates a raised impression on a piece of glass, which mimics real etching. To do this you need to use a machine called a dry-mount press to heat the film so it binds with the glass; however, a design or a phrase for the etching is needed to put on the piece of glass.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the design or write a phrase on a piece of paper. Trace the design or phrase onto a piece of laminating film with a felt tip marker. You can also use laminating film that already has a design or phrase.

    • 2

Turn on the dry-mount press and preheat the unit between 185 and 225 degrees. Allow time for the machine to heat to the proper temperature.

    • 3

Clean the piece of glass you want to use with the glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Peel the backing from the laminating film and place it on the piece of glass. Cut around the design with a hobby knife, if needed.

    • 4

Position the piece of glass under the sponge pad of the dry-mount press. Adjust the settings on the press to match the thickness of the glass.

    • 5

Turn on the press and wait for the process to fuse the laminating film to the glass. This creates the look of the etching on the piece of glass.
