How to Troubleshoot an M4 Selector Switch

The M4 is a carbine rifle that was the successor to the M16 rifle. It is also the standard weapon for U.S. Marines. It has many features, including single-shot, semi-automatic and fully automatic firing settings. These settings are controlled by a selector switch on the side of the weapon, above the trigger. This switch may experience problems, but there are ways to quickly troubleshoot the issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Magazine release" button located just above where the magazine meets the weapon. Pull the magazine out and set it aside.

    • 2

Pull back the bolt at the side of the bullet chamber and check the chamber to ensure that there isn't a round still inside of it.

    • 3

Locate the selector switch just above the trigger housing. Try to move it between positions. If it won't move at all, it is too tight, and if it moves far too easily, then it is too loose.

    • 4

Pop the screw cover off of the screw at the rear of the switch with the tip of a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 5

Tighten or loosen the screw until you have reached the desired give for the selector switch with a screwdriver.

    • 6

      Replace the screw and cover.
