How to Make a Homemade Low-Lying Fog Machine Without Using Dry Ice

The appearance of fog is made more sinister when it is dark outside and the surroundings seem scary. You can make a machine that will produce a fog-like effect without using dry ice or burning any chemicals. You will need supplies from a hobby store or a crafts store, as well as an appliance from a department store. Household supplies will be needed as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic wash bin, 2 feet diameter
  • Flat-edged screwdriver
  • Electric fan
  • Gray tissue papers
  • Ruler
  • Straightedge
  • Utility knife
  • Masking tape
  • 25-foot extension cord

Instructions

    • 1

Place the plastic wash bin on the floor. Press the tip of a flat-edged screwdriver through the side of the bin to punch a hole. Run the tip of the screwdriver around the inside of the hole clockwise 10 to 20 times to enlarge the hole.

    • 2

Place the electric fan inside the bin. Angle the fan so that the grill is facing up. Run the end of the power cord from the fan through the hole in the side of the bin.

    • 3

Cut a 6-inch long and half-inch wide strip from the gray tissue paper with the straightedge and utility knife. Cut an additional 200 strips in the same manner.

    • 4

Tape an end of one of the strips to the inside edge of the bin with a strip of masking tape. Tape another strip in the same manner next to the one just taped. Continue to tape strips of gray tissue to the inside of the bin until you have completed a circle. Repeat this procedure with another set of strips. Continue to repeat this procedure until you no longer have any strips left.

    • 5

Plug the power cord into an extension cord. Plug the extension cord into an outlet.

    • 6

Place your "fog" making machine that doesn't use dry ice or any chemicals whatsoever where it will be the most effective for your Halloween or spooky display. Arrange the bin so that it is in the shadows with no bright light falling on it. Flip the switch on the fan to make the "fog" start to rise from the bin.
