How to Make a Tri-fold Quilt Stand

Display your handmade quilts with a tri-fold quilt stand. Quilt stands are common for displaying quilts at art venues as well as retail outlets. What separates a tri-fold quilt stand from other quilt stands is that they are collapsible. They are designed to fold into a third of their size. This function makes transportation convenient when moving your quilts and stands from the work shop to the art show. Build your own quilt stand using pine lumber because it is a common building material that can be purchased at most local hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two 63 inch boards parallel and 28 inches apart. Set three 28 inch boards between the 63 inch boards at right angles and space the 28 inch boards 28 ½ inches apart. The two outside 28 inch boards are flush with the ends of the 63 inch boards. Screw through the 63 inch boards and into the ends of the 28 inch boards using two screws for each end of the 28 inch boards. This is one frame to your tri-fold quilt frame. Repeat this step two more times to build two more frames.

    • 2

Stack two frames on top of each other so the edges are flush. Screw three hinges to a pair of 63 inch boards that are against each other. These hinges are aligned with the 28 inch boards and will allow the frames to open up to a 180 degree angle.

    • 3

Set the last frame on top of the first two that are connected by the hinges. Screw three hinges to the 63 inch board on this frame and to the 63 inch board on the frame below it so they are also aligned with the 28 inch boards. This set of hinges is on the opposite side of the frame that the first set of hinges were screwed to.

    • 4

Position the three frames upright so they are standing on the bottom 28 inch boards. Fold the two outside frames away from the middle so they make a zigzag shape. This will allow the stand to stay upright. Screw your eye hooks into the top 28 inch boards to hang your quilt from the stand.
