How to Keep an Aquarium Pump Quiet

Aquariums in general need a lot of attention to keep the fish alive. The pH, temperature, nitrate levels and dissolved oxygen content are just a small sampling of the required monitoring. Aquarium pumps are a great way of providing one of those: dissolved oxygen. Unfortunately they host a small caveat of noise production. There are several ways of ̵6;silencing̵7; aquarium pumps aside from purchasing a ̵6;quieter̵7; one. The steps below outline a simple process to remove excess noise from the aquarium pump.

Things You'll Need

  • Aquarium pump
  • mason brick
  • several large sponges
  • box cutter

Instructions

    • 1

Hollow out one of the sponges with a box cutter so that the aquarium pump will fit snugly inside. Be sure to cut openings for both the tubing and the electrical cord.

    • 2

Place the pump with the sponge liner on top of the remaining sponge.

    • 3

Place the mason brick on top of the two sponges to form a ̵6;sandwich̵7; with the pump in the middle. The brick will provide the ballast to dampen the pump, much like the concrete ballast in a washing machine. The sponge will absorb any excess noise not dampened.
