How to Change the Capacitor of a Seiko 5M62 Kinetic

The Seiko 5M62 Kinetic is a bit different than other quartz movement watches. Instead of using an ordinary battery, the 5M62 Kinetic features a capacitor that stores the needed electricity for the watch gained from kinetic movement. Unfortunately, the capacitor tends to deteriorate after a few years of use, leaving it unable to hold a charge. Having the capacitor replaced by a jewelry repair shop can be expensive, so it is cost-effective to replace the part on your own.

Instructions

  1. Removing the Old Capacitor

    • 1

Place the watch face down inside a vise. Cover the vise teeth with soft cloth to avoid marring the surface of the watch.

    • 2

Position the Jaxa-style watch case opener onto the notches on the case cover. Turn the watch case opener clockwise to loosen the case cover from the watch and set the case aside.

    • 3

Remove the watch from the vise and lay it face down on a soft surface. Remove the screw securing the winding weight to the watch with a jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

    • 4

Pull the winding weight and central gear off the watch with a pair of tweezers. Remove the three screws holding the capacitor cover in place with a jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

    • 5

Remove the capacitor cover and mylar insulator with a pair of tweezers. Carefully pull the old capacitor out of the watch.

    Installing the New Capacitor

    • 6

Install the new capacitor into the watch. Place the mylar insulator and capacitor cover over the battery.

    • 7

Insert the three screws into the capacitor cover and tighten them with the jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

    • 8

Reattach the central gear to the middle of the watch and place the winding weight over it. Insert the retaining screw into the winding weight and tighten it with the jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

    • 9

Place the case cover onto the back of the watch. Screw the case cover onto the watch with the case opener wrench.
