Hobbies for Fathers & Daughters

The relationship that you have with your daughter is critical as you are the most important male role model in her life. If your relationship has become strained or you are both struggling to find common ground, pursuing a hobby together may help to open the lines of communication. Although finding a hobby that you will both enjoy doing is essential, the most important thing is you will be spending quality together as father and daughter.
  1. Reading

    • Reading allows both father and daughter to share time together while reading what interests them. Reading can be done at home, at a library, in a park or coffee shop. To make the hobby more meaningful read classics together such as "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux or "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. Discuss the books with one another when you are finished reading them. An alternative is to read the newspaper together and have a lively debate about current events.

    Genealogy

    • Undertake a family genealogy project with your daughter to investigate your family roots while working together as a team. Researching your family tree will also be an educational extra-curricular project for your child to develop important research skills she'll need for the future. Start by gathering basic information from older relatives before heading to the local library to start on your research. Take the hobby on the road by organizing a road trip to visit places where your relatives were born and raised.

    Recreation Classes

    • Many cities and towns have recreational programming available to the public for a fee. Cooking classes are gender-neutral and will provide both of you with useful skills. If both of you enjoy working with your hands, sign up for a pottery class. If you want to broaden your language skills learn another language together such as French, Spanish or Chinese.

    Physical Activity

    • If both of you are looking for a way to become healthier and physically active, learn a sport together. Sports like golf, tennis and running will give you an opportunity to get active while strengthening your relationship at the same time. Also, working out together will give you motivation to stay on track to meet your individual health goals. When taking lessons isn't possible due to time constraints or economic reasons, schedule time throughout the week to go out for a walk or bike ride together. Or kick a soccer ball around at a local park.

    Exploring Hobbies

    • Explore each others hobbies. This is a good way to get to know each other and develop an understanding of passions of your family member. If your daughter is musically inclined, ask her to sing or perform for you. If your father enjoys collecting stamps ask to see his stamp collection. Even if you aren't completely interested in your loved one's hobby be open minded and sincere when asking questions and exploring the other person's favorite pastime.
