How to Install a Dowel in an RC Plane Wing

The wings on remote control planes that are constructed of wood are held to the body with dowels. A dowel is a wood bolt that is inserted into a hole. On an RC plane wing, the dowel is an extension of the portion of the wing that touches the body. Depending on the model, the wing may also be constructed of dowels. No matter the use, a dowel needs to be properly installed so the wing doesn̵7;t fall apart when you fly the plane.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the RC plane assembly plan and note the locations of each dowel. The glue used dries quickly and knowing the layout of the pieces before you begin will help you work quickly, before the glue dries.

    • 2

Cut the dowels to the proper size with a utility knife. Use a ruler to cut the dowels at the correct length. If the dowels are pre-cut, skip this step.

    • 3

Sand the dowel lightly with fine-grit sandpaper. The wood in some RC plane model kits is already sanded, but it is better to be safe than sorry. The glue adheres to the wood better if it is sanded.

    • 4

Squeeze a dot of cyanoacrylate or epoxy glue into the holes in which the dowels will be inserted. One hole is on the wing and the other hole is on the body of the plane. If the wing is constructed with dowels and not just held to the body with dowels, apply a dot of glue to the dowel in the location at which other dowels or pieces of wood will be attached. The tip of the glue bottle may need to be cut with scissors.

    • 5

Insert one of the ends of the dowel into hole on the wing. The glue will spread as you insert the dowel. Align the other end of the dowel with the hole on the body. Push the body and wing together so the dowel inserts into the hole on the body. If the dowel is attached to another piece of wood that doesn̵7;t contain holes, skip this step.

    • 6

Align the dowel with the piece of wood to which it will be attached. Press the pieces together. If the dowel is inserted into holes, skip this step.

    • 7

Clamp the pieces together with a modeler̵7;s clamp and let the glue cure for the time recommended on the bottle. Many cyanoacrylate and epoxy glues take at least 24 hours to completely cure.
