How to Make Playdough & Cook It

Making your own play dough at home is quick and inexpensive. You can create virtually any color and shape imaginable. Play dough is similar to clay in its ability to form into various shapes. Like clay, play dough can be dried into the shapes that you create, and you can use these as decorations throughout your home. This will give your kids a chance to show off some of their artwork and keep it for years to come.

Instructions

  1. Making Play Dough

    • 1

Turn a burner to medium heat and then place on it a medium pot. Put flour, water, salt, cream of tartar and oil into the pot.

    • 2

Mix the ingredients continuously until they form a dough that resembles play dough. Add more water if the mixture is too dry and add more flour if it is too wet.

    • 3

Remove the mixture from the pot with a spoon and put it onto the counter. Let it cool and then knead it with your hands. Divide the dough into four sections.

    • 4

Dent the top of each section with your thumb and then drip in food coloring. Squeeze each section of dough until the coloring is fully incorporated.

    • 5

Store the play dough in a zip-lock bag or a plastic container until ready to use. The dough will last longer if left in the fridge.

    Baking Play Dough

    • 6

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Create whatever shape you want with the dough.

    • 7

Place wax paper on a cookie sheet and then put the play dough onto the wax paper. Cook for approximately 30 minutes or until hard.

    • 8

Place the play dough to harden at room temperature for approximately two days as an alternative to cooking. Placing it in the sun will increase the hardening time, but the play dough will be more likely to crack.
