How to Make Ice-Storm Movie Props

Movie props can imitate real objects without the weight, functionality or danger that might be involved in real life. Make a giant icicle that could only be generated from a huge ice storm that will look real, but will never melt or hurt anyone if it were to fall on him. Supplies from a home-and-garden store or from a hardware store will be necessary. Tools commonly found in the home will also be needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the foam core board on a work surface with the smooth side facing up. Draw an 11-by-14-inch rectangle on the board with the grease pencil. Cut out the rectangle from the board with a straightedge and utility knife. Place the excess board aside.

    • 2

Place the rectangle horizontally on the work surface. Measure across the left end of the rectangle and make a dot at the halfway mark. Measure from the dot to each side and make an ̶0;X̶1; at the halfway mark. Draw a line from each ̶0;X̶1; to the corner edges at the other end of the rectangle. Cut through the lines just drawn with the utility knife. Pull the excess board off each side and dispose of it.

    • 3

Run a piece of medium-grit sandpaper against each side of the rectangle until it feels smooth to the touch. Repeat this with the right end of the rectangle.

    • 4

Run a piece of fine-grit sandpaper against the left end until the sides form a point. Wipe the dust off the rectangle that is now an ice spike with a water-moistened paper towel. Let the water evaporate.

    • 5

Place sheets of newspaper on a work surface. Place the spike horizontally on the newspaper. Shake the can of glossy white paint for 10 seconds. Spray the spike with the paint. Spray the sides and ends of the spike. Let the paint dry for three hours and apply another coat. Sprinkle glitter dust on the spike. Let the paint dry for three hours before turning it over. Repeat the procedure and apply the glitter.
