How to Make Chum Crab Bait

You've probably seen nature shows where people bait large sharks with cut up pieces of fish called "chum." Not only does this method of attracting fish work for sharks, it works for many different sea creatures, including crabs. With the right chum, you'll draw out many crabs, and because they aren't the fastest of sea creatures, you'll catch many of them fairly quickly.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic freezer bags
  • Brine shrimp
  • Krill
  • Bait worms
  • Kitchen knife

Instructions

    • 1

Chop up even proportions of small brine shrimp, krill fish and bait worms, and mix them together. Make sure they're chopped finely.

    • 2

Place the mixture inside a sealable freezer bag and seal the bag.

    • 3

Place the bag in the freezer overnight. Only remove it when the contents are frozen solid.

    • 4

Take the bag to the area you intend to fish for crabs (usually in the shallows) and open the bag.

    • 5

Break off bits of the frozen mixture and drop them in the water. They'll dissolve and attract crabs, which you can then hook with a fishing line. Or, place the mixture in traps to lure crabs in.
